My Role in Reentry Advocacy

  • Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS): I serve on the Lived Experience Council for DPSCS, contributing my insights and expertise to enhance reentry strategies and support systems.
  • Maryland Governor’s Reentry Task Force: Appointed by Governor Wes Moore, I am actively involved in shaping state-wide policies and initiatives aimed at improving reentry outcomes and providing meaningful support to individuals transitioning back into society.
  • Legislative Advocacy: I have testified on multiple bills aimed at supporting those currently incarcerated and for their reentry, including advocacy for the Second Chance Act, which seeks to improve the conditions and outcomes for those transitioning back to society.

Media and Advocacy Bills

  • Testimony Before the House Judiciary Committee: Curtis Alston testified in support of the Second Look Act, sharing his personal journey from serving multiple life sentences to becoming a community leader after release. He emphasized the importance of second chances for individuals who have demonstrated rehabilitation.
  • Appointment to Reentry Task Force: Recognizing his commitment to criminal justice reform, state officials appointed Alston to a task force focused on improving inmate reentry strategies, underscoring his influence in shaping policies that support reintegration.
  • Advocacy Through F.R.E.S.H: As a representative of F.R.E.S.H, an organization dedicated to supporting formerly incarcerated individuals, Alston provided oral testimony favoring the Second Look Act, highlighting the potential for rehabilitation and meaningful contributions to society.
